QVC

I was a UX Product Designer at QVC (a TV and online retailer with annual revenues over $10B). I started off as a UX Architect in April 2016 and was promoted a year later. I was heading up the research, validation and testing of all current and new digital video experiences, including their growing OTT presence, where my team helped roll out several new apps in 2018 for platforms such FireTV, Roku and Samsung Smart TV’s.

This role gave me great exposure working for a high traffic/revenue business with operations in multiple countries, and gave me the opportunity to manage a UX Architect and UX Designer to deliver highly successful web, TV and app experiences. I was responsible for delivering next generation video shopping experiences across all devices and touchpoints which means my team and I get to test some really interesting concepts.

In this role I spent time on the end-to-end lifecycle of new product ideas as well as refining current products. When working on new product concepts, I was heavily involved in user research, MVP definition, conducting design workshops, creating and testing interactive prototypes with customers and hi-fidelity design.

What I did

User Research & Testing

I worked with the User Researcher and UX Architect to devise usability studies that would help us answer questions about our designs and interactions. We relied heavily on UserTesting.com to conduct the volume of tests needed to give us the information we needed.

We also conducted in-house, face-to-face user testing and focus groups in order to understand more about our customers and their needs.

Interaction Design

I created hi-fidelity mockups of design concepts in Principle to test parts of flows with our users.

These were a crucial part of our validation phase as they give users an experience that is very similar to the real product, which gives some excellent feedback on the finer points of the design and interactions.

Hi Fidelity UI Design

I worked alongside my UX Designer to create the final design assets that are provided to developers. I put in place standards for the handoff process that now requires all UX Designers to use a plugin that exports highly detailed specs to the cloud that any developer can inspect in order to get a pixel perfect representation of the original design. We used Sketch exclusively.

Promoting UX

I was involved in running multiple global workshops with CEO's and VP's of Digital in order to brainstorm forward thinking concepts and create POC's based on the workshops. This was a great opportunity for me to push a culture of User Centred Design/thinking with our leaders.

Our UX workshop project outcomes included a new initiative that was nominated for the QVC One Award - an award given to employees who have achieved something great for the business.

The concept behind our workshops involved using the Design Thinking methodology as a structure for conversations around a problem space that the business wants to address, with some tangible potential POC's that the UX team can go away and work on.

Outcome

During my time at QVC, some key outcomes included:

• Building and launching a new digital live TV shopping experience (across all platforms)

• Generating over €8M revenue from the new live shopping experiences

• Nominated for QVC's One Award for the success of this feature
